Life is Unpredictable

God meant it to be this way. There are times when we feel alone and in a cave like David. And there are times when we feel surrounded by people and power, again like David. The man after God’s heart lived life in many different locations, circumstances, and urgencies.

In Psalm 142, he writes a cry of the heart in the cave of Adullam as he was hiding from King Saul. (1Sa.22:1) He is alone. He begins his cry by complaint (v.2), then a description of his pain and circumstance. He is weak, alone, and afraid. But he reminds himself that “You are my refuge…, my portion in the land of the living” Two powerful truths. When trouble arises, renew the mind with truth. Regardless of the pain or fear, God is our refuge and His is our portion, or safety and satisfaction. When we repeat the truth of God, when we rely on Him, when we say that we will “praise Your name”, we are ready for support and love.

David wrote this alone but in a short order, 400 men came to his side. And from that time on, he was never alone again. But he did not know that in the cave. What he did know was that God was his safety and satisfaction. And that’s all we need to know in the cave or under the crown.
